If gender roles and stereotypes are contextual, so are standards of gender nonconformity. Some expressions might not seem particularly bold to you or me, but in the right context would completely change the way someone is treated. A man wearing plain, barely visible stud earrings could be considered risky. The same outfit can communicate entirely different things on a stage, on a college campus, on the bus or behind a front desk. A lot of it, maybe most, has nothing to do with clothing but your subtle mannerisms, as those of us who are still considered “flamboyant” no matter how we dress will tell you. Much of this does not translate in an online persona, and social media has given us a skewed view of just how “normalized’ certain expressions are. It’s all so RELATIVE!
